Are Subtropical Community Gardens and Food Forests A Threat to the Environment? presented by Christel Schrank

From a fruit-growing background in South Australia’s Riverland, Christel trained in traditional agriculture and worked for seven years in pest plant and animal control, as well as natural resource management with Greening Australia and Catchment Care Councils in Western Australia. Since retiring in 2014, Christel has been sharing her collection of unusual edible plants by establishing the River Heads Food Forest Public Demonstration Garden adjoining the River Heads Community Garden and Hall. After five years this small area is flourishing with unusual Asian vegetables, perennial tropical greens, bush tucker, climbers, bird, bee and butterfly attracting plants, herbs and spices, as well as some scented, medicinal plants and unusual ornamentals.
