Further Council facilities to close in wake of coronavirus - Issued 12:30pm 23 March 2020

Fraser Coast Regional Council will close its pools and all cultural facilities from today while the pounds and adoption centre will be open for appointment only to help slow the potential spread of the coronavirus.

The move follows the National Cabinet decision last night to close a range of venues across the country, such as bars, clubs, cinemas and indoor sporting venues like gyms.

CEO Ken Diehm said Council was actively monitoring and responding to the rapidly evolving situation.

“The health and safety of the community and our workers is our highest priority. Council’s focus is on maintaining essential services – water supply, the sewerage systems and rubbish collection,” he said.

“We have made these decisions today in the wake of the updated advice from the Federal and State Governments for the need for more social distancing throughout the community to minimise the spread of the coronavirus.

“These are unprecedented times and we urge everyone to stay calm, stay informed and abide by the directions coming out from the National Cabinet.”

From today:

  • The Maryborough and Hervey Bay Aquatic Centres will close;
  • Cultural facilities such as The Story Bank, Bond Store, Gatakers’ Artspace will close;
  • The Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park will close;
  • The Fraser Coast Adoption Centre and the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Pounds will remain open by appointment only; and
  • The region’s waste facilities will remain open but the reuse market centres (tip shops) will close.

Council’s Customer Service Centres will remain open at this stage, but residents are encouraged to pay bills over the phone or online.

Today’s decision follows last week’s announcement of the closure of a range of Council facilities including the Brolga Theatre, Wetside Water Park, the Orchid House, the Community Nursery and the Halcro Street Community Centre.

All library branches closed last Saturday while Maryborough Walking Tours have ceased, and Customs House, the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere are all closed.

INFORMATION FOR MARYBOROUGH SHOWGROUNDS & EQUESTRIAN PARK HIRERS: COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS PREVENTION - Issued 10am 18 March 2020

Dear Hirer,

Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park (MSEP) are closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding COVID-19.

As of today, the Australian Government is placing limits on non-essential organised gatherings as below.  These limits help to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They are especially important for vulnerable people, such as those over 60 and those with chronic disease.

Indoor Events:

Nonessential indoor gatherings of greater than 100 people (including staff) will no longer be permitted from Wednesday 18 March 2020.

An indoor gathering refers to a gathering within a single enclosed area (i.e. an area, room or premises that is or are substantially enclosed by a roof and walls, regardless of whether the roof or walls or any part of them are permanent, temporary, open or closed).

The State Government will give further consideration to practical guidance and rules after consideration at the next National Cabinet meeting on Friday 20 March 2020.  In the meantime, these venues should continue to apply social distancing and hygiene practices:

  • This includes being able to maintain a distance of 1.5 metres between patrons.
  • Hand hygiene products and suitable waste receptacles need to be available, with frequent cleaning and waste disposal.

Outdoor Events:

Outdoor events of fewer than 500 attendees may proceed.  There are general measures that all events should follow including:

  • In a given occupied space, there must be no more than one person per four square metres of ground space.
  • Availability of hand hygiene products and suitable waste receptacles, with frequent cleaning and waste disposal.

In accordance with this advice, we are currently assessing our operational procedures and contacting our hirers to ensure you are up to date and remain in touch as the environment is changing rapidly.

Stay up to date:
You can stay up to date with the latest information by visiting our website, following us on Facebook or calling the venue office on 4122 3584 between 8.30am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday or 0427 773 760 on weekends.

MSEP PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

The safety of our community, hirers and staff is our greatest priority. The following precautionary measures have been implemented:

  • Attendance for any one event must be capped to ensure that organisers, crew and attendees do not exceed the totals imposed by the Australian Government.
  • We have increased the frequency and detail of cleaning of the venue.
  • Staff have been instructed and provisioned to ensure a high level of personal hygiene.
  • In addition, we are taking steps to ensure the welfare of our employees. This includes instructing employees who feel ill to stay home and consult their healthcare providers.  We are also urging all employees to be vigilant about frequent hand washing.

ADVICE FOR HIRERS

In accordance with the current Government advice, we ask that you remain up to date with and adhere to Federal and State COVID-19 directives, which are subject to change without notice.

A detailed Risk Assessment must be received in relation to COVID-19 in order for your hire booking to proceed.
