Fraser Coast Museums

A love of history is not compulsory - just a keenness to get lost in time on an amazing journey into the pioneering past of the Fraser Coast.

Follow a trail around the many Fraser Coast museums and historical collections to get a sense of the struggles and ultimate triumphs of the region's early pioneers as they settled the wild Australian bush, established farming and industry and turned dusty makeshift settlements into thriving towns filled with stately buildings and grand homes.

The museum is housed in a 1927 former doctors residence located in the hospital grounds. On display are items and documents relating to Maryborough's early public general and maternity hospitals dating from the 1850's.  Old surgical instruments and hospital equipment, early photographs, original plans for the current hospital dating back to 1887.

The museum is the place to visit if you want to learn accurate details of Australia's first and only recorded outbreak of Pneumonic Plague or the Black Plague, which occurred in Maryborough in 1905.

The outbreak killed eight people including two nurses, Cecilia Bauer and Rose Adelaide Wiles, who, although they knew that if they nursed the sick they would surely be infected, began the work of caring for the dying.
