Fraser Coast Museums

A love of history is not compulsory - just a keenness to get lost in time on an amazing journey into the pioneering past of the Fraser Coast.

Follow a trail around the many Fraser Coast museums and historical collections to get a sense of the struggles and ultimate triumphs of the region's early pioneers as they settled the wild Australian bush, established farming and industry and turned dusty makeshift settlements into thriving towns filled with stately buildings and grand homes.

Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum

Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum is regarded as one of the best community museums in Australia, with over 7000 items of military and colonial memorabilia. It is located in a beautifully restored heritage-listed building in the heart of Portside, Maryborough's original port district. It has an extensive navy, army and airforce display, including two Victoria Crosses, a Cross of Valour, and many other significant medals in the Gallipoli room

Maryborough Whistle Stop Museum

Maryborough's impressive rail heritage is on show at Whistle Stop Museum located on the site of the heritage-listed railway station (c. 1882). The museum contains a small but remarkable collection of railway memorabilia. The museum's dedicated team of volunteers also crews the Mary Ann, a working replica of Queensland's first steam engine built in Maryborough in 1873.  Mary Ann runs through Queens Park every Thursday and the last Sunday of the month.

Maryborough Wide Bay and Burnett Historical Society

Located in the School of Arts, one of Maryborough's most beautiful heritage buildings, the Maryborough Wide Bay Burnett Historical Society offers a wonderful snapshot of early history through a collection of more than 3500 photographs. The collection also includes historical records, over 3000 books, wedding gowns 1890–1910, needle work and lace artefacts.

Mt Bauple and District Historical Society Cultural Centre and Museum

Reflecting the early history of the Tiaro area, the museum is set within extensive gardens and houses a treasure trove of memorabilia including old photographs, family histories, war records, rare coin collection and an extensive display of telephones, antiques and collectibles dating back more than a century. Of special interest is a crocodile skin from a large reptile shot in the Mary River near Owanyilla in 1964 and a 1907 locomotive. The gardens have free BBQs and picnic tables.  Public toilets available at all times.

Wide Bay Hospitals Museum Society

The museum is housed in a 1927 former doctors residence located in the hospital grounds. On display are items and documents relating to Maryborough's early public general and maternity hospitals dating from the 1850's.  Old surgical instruments and hospital equipment, early photographs, original plans for the current hospital dating back to 1887.
