A new space to create

A new space to create

Posted on 12 Oct 2017 by Our Fraser Coast

Fraser Coast artists now have a place in Hervey Bay where they can officially make mess!

Culture, Arts and Environment Portfolio Councillor David Lewis today formally opened the new Creative Space, developed in response to challenges faced at the Fraser Coast Cultural Centre.

Cr Lewis, who put $16,500 from his Discretionary Fund towards the project, said the new Fraser Coast Creative Space provides a dedicated area for art-related activities.

“We have a wonderful building for cultural displays but there was nowhere artists could unleash their creativity,” Cr Lewis said.

“Council bought the former Stegbar office building in the Cultural Centre precinct for other reasons but when we learnt our artists were in need, we repurposed the space for them.

“A range of professional development workshops for artists will be developed including core business skills in traditional and online marketing to help artists learn how to promote their work.

“The space will also be made available for hire on a low-cost basis to individual artists and school or community groups.

“Located between the art gallery and Old Maryborough Road and Main Street intersection, the building is in a busy area where people will easily see what an active space it is.”

“As part of the project, Council commissioned a street art work by Fraser Coast artist Akos Juhasz, which explores painting through the ages.

“Akos was an arts professor in Hungary before moving to Melbourne for four years, then on to Hervey Bay. We are so lucky to have his skills as part of our community.”
