Artist Profile: James Hall

Back

“Looking into the Blue” is a continuation of works by local artist, James Hall that explores and celebrates the Fraser Coast region, Fraser Island and surrounding coastlines. This follows on from James’ previous exhibitions “Blue Vista” 2012-2013 Gatakers ArtSpace, Maryborough and “A Touch of Blue” 2009 The Palace Regional Gallery, Childers.

James’ interest in photography was the catalyst for this vast body of work saying “I have taken [inspiring] images on my camera that I then recreate into artworks using traditional oil paints…depicting the simplistic beauty of our native land and sea scapes.” James has been developing not only this body of work but his artistic identity over a number of years.

"With an interest in artwork starting twenty-five years ago, I fell in love with oils as a medium. Over the years my style and techniques have matured, including lots of spatula work."

In his latest creative investigation, James focuses on Fraser Island’s coloured sands, stunning white beaches and diverse vegetation. Growing up on a country farm beside the picturesque Condamine River, landscapes have always been a source of inspiration, drawing on childhood memories and stories. “Rainbow Beach, Bargara, 1770 and our very own Hervey Bay beaches, harbour and pier also offer inspiration for painting. The life within the landscape, the luminance of colour and play of light, all influence the way I paint.”

Exhibiting these artworks has enabled James to realise the impact he has on both locals and visitors to the region. If you have ever lived in Australia or close to the beach, these works will resonate and allow time for deep reflection. “People’s lives are essentially very similar. They move forward making different tracks but our feelings and emotions can be the same” he explains.

James has exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions over the last ten years with some notable achievement awards.
