"The Black Death” a story of sacrifice and tragedy

Mosaic tiles created by Aboriginal artist and elder Olga Miller illustrating two tales from ‘The Legends of Moonie Jarl'

A father’s need to help his children sleep more comfortably led to tragedy in 1905 when the sacking Richard. O’Connell took home from the wharf was infected with pneumonic plague. Nurses Cecilia Bauer and Rose Wiles courageously volunteered to nurse the children, five of whom would die, along with a neighbour and, finally, the nurses themselves. This 1966 fountain commemorates their sacrifice.
