A town full of labouring men and women, Maryborough saw the formation of one of Australia’s first unions, the General Labourer’s Union, by William Demaine in 1890. Demaine was also a force behind the 8 Hour Day movement. This flywheel, a pivotal component of the powerhouse that kept Walker’s Shipyards working, is a symbol of the strength and determination in the community it served – the working folk of Maryborough.
