Port of Entry to the New World
Artist: Patrick Grinter, inspired by Jan Mitchell, Geelong
Location: Queens Park
The first immigrant ship to arrive at the mouth of the river was the ‘Ariadne’ in 1862. Over the next thirty years, some 22 000 immigrants would make the same journey, arriving at the Government Wharf here. They all hungered for a new life. First stop was the Customs House to have their papers checked, and their luggage searched.
