Meet the wildlife
There are untold ways to get up close and personal with the amazing wildlife on the Fraser Coast – from eyeballing majestic humpback whales to snorkelling with stingrays and reef fish and watching turtles hatch.
- Whales at play - Hervey Bay is known as Australia’s whale watching capital. Every year in late July,
humpback whales migrate to the warm Hervey Bay waters and remain until November when

- All six species of marine turtles found in Queensland inhabit the Fraser Coast. Three species of dolphins, the common dolphin, bottlenosed dolphin and the Indo-Pacific hump-back dolphin, are also resident in the area.
- Take an eco-tour anytime of year to see dolphins, turtles and other marine creatures.
- Snorkel on sheltered coral reefs or view coral and marine life from a glass bottomed boat.
- Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and is home to Australia’s native dog, the dingo. There are many wildlife tours available where you can spot these creatures along with many other animals,
including dolphins, whales (in season) and dugongs in their natural habitat.
- The seagrass beds of the Great Sandy Strait are nursery and feeding grounds for prawns and fish and feeding grounds for dugong and turtles.
- See the turtles nest and hatch at a small but established rookery at ESA Park on the Esplanade at Point Vernon.
- On the beach at Urangan is an all natural aquarium with a great variety of fi sh species, soft and hard corals, turtles and sharks.
