Hervey Bay Arts Society Celebrates 50 Years

Back

When you enter the Hervey Bay Arts Society Gallery, you gather a feeling of community, kindness and sharing.

Pieces of art are hung lovingly around the space by smiling faces that are welcoming and excited by their task. It comes as no surprise that the organisation is one of the longest-running on the Fraser Coast as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

President, Mark Brose, speaks with much enthusiasm about the history of the society which was created on humble beginnings. The hard work and dedication of founding members have seen the society grow to what it is now. Making use of local grants and many fundraising events, the organisation has called Gallery 5 on Sandy Street, Urangan home since 1993.

The building, once an ex chandlery store and bakery, is now a beautiful fit-for-purpose gallery within walking distance to the shops and pier.

More than just a gallery, however, The Hervey Bay Arts Society is an organisation brimming with friendships, talent, creativity and imagination.

"A fabulous space to display artworks and develop art skills for a broad range of people. Everyone, from those who wish to begin with the basics, to accomplished artists who want to expand their already substantial skills are catered for at our sessions"

Mark Brose - President, Hervey Bay Arts Society

Over the years, the Annual Competitive Art Exhibition has become a permanent fixture of the Fraser Coast cultural calendar. From humble beginnings, this exhibition started 27 years ago at the Hervey Bay Hall and will be held this year at Gatakers Artspace from 3 July to 15 August. This event will showcase workshop activities and promote visual art in our community.
