This romantic drama is based on a book of the same name and moves in time between the present day and the late 1960s. It was chosen as Iceland’s entry for Best International Foreign Film at the 97th Academy Awards, but, though shortlisted, was not nominated. It won an Audience Award at the Tromso International Film Festival in Norway this year and was described by critics as ‘a wistful reverie on life itself’. The male lead, played in the present by Egil Olafsson is a young student studying in the UK in the late 60s, but gives up to become a dishwasher in a Japanese restaurant. He works hard, learns Japanese and is trained to be a chef by the owner Takahashi. He meets and falls in love with Miko, the owner’s daughter but loses her when the restaurant closes and father and daughter disappear. 50 years later, he tries to find them and eventually tracks Miko down now living back in Japan.
