Works by some of the best Fraser Coast artists will be unveiled at the 38th annual Hervey Bay Art Society exhibition opening at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough on Saturday June 18.

“The exhibition, which was established in 1983 has become an annual fixture in the Fraser Coast cultural calendar,” Councillor David Lewis said.

“The Fraser Coast has a rich and diverse range of artists covering a variety of painting styles, so expect to see an exhibition that is vibrant and exciting as artists vie for almost $7,000 in prizemoney.

“The works and winners will be revealed as part of the exhibition opening on Saturday June 18.

“The exhibition fills all four galleries at Gatakers Artspace and will be open until Sunday, July 31.”

The opening ceremony and Awards Presentation will be held at Gatakers on Saturday, June 18 from 2 pm.

“The competitive art exhibition is an open competition and always attracts excellent artists, both from the Fraser Coast and beyond,” Hervey Bay Art Society President Mark Bose said.

“And the exhibition is always popular with the public, so if artists want their artwork to be seen, this is the exhibition to enter.

“With seven award categories in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, this exhibition will be an incredible opportunity for residents to enjoy a variety of talent in one place.”

The Fraser Coast had a strong tradition of performing arts, visual arts, heritage and cultural experiences, Cr Lewis said.

“The arts and culture are at the heart of our personal and regional identity,” he said.

“I look froward to seeing the First Prize recipient of the Open Section this year. The category is sponsored by the Fraser Coast Regional Council ($2,000 first prize, acquisitive award and $500 second prize sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL).

The category last year was won by Ann Beach from Point Vernon, Hervey Bay with a piece titled A walk in the Bush.

Gatakers Artspace is at 311 Kent St, Maryborough and is open weekdays 9.30am to 3.30pm and weekends 9.30am to 2pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.
