Workshop to enhance skills in community museums

Local historians are set to enhance their skills in a transformative workshop hosted by Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Queensland Museum later this month.

Staff and volunteers from various museums and heritage groups will come together for a workshop at The Story Bank on Wednesday 23 August that is aimed at preserving and safeguarding our rich historical heritage.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said he was looking forward to this new initiative.

"Our region boasts a vibrant tapestry of cultural heritage, and it is imperative that we equip our community museums with the necessary tools and knowledge to uphold and protect this legacy,” he said.

“The workshop, which is made possible through the Regional Arts Development Fund, is a remarkable opportunity for our staff and volunteers to learn from esteemed experts like Queensland Museum’s Joshua Tarrant and further enrich their expertise in collection management."

The partnership between Fraser Coast Regional Council and Queensland Museum aims to empower participants with fundamental skills related to object handling, labelling, cataloguing, and assessing significance.

“These skills are integral to the effective preservation and curation of historical artifacts, ensuring that the region's unique stories and cultural treasures are safeguarded for future generations,” Mr Seymour said.

“Through interactive and hands-on learning, participants will gain invaluable insights into best practices, innovative techniques, and approaches to managing and preserving historical collections.”
