Visitors have been flocking to the Story Bank for a “practically perfect” experience as the museum clocks record numbers last month.

Mayor George Seymour said more than 1,500 guests visited the attraction in December.

“Almost 200 visitors came through just on December 31 which was the highest visitation on a single day since opening in June 2019,” he said.

“88 per cent were visitors to the region with the other 12 per cent Fraser Coast residents.

“Despite facing 12 weeks of closure due to Covid-19 11,553 people toured the Story Bank in 2020.”

The Story Bank was not the only facility proving popular during the holiday period.

“At the Bond Store the number of visitors increased by 147 per cent and Gatakers Artspace visitation was up 93 per cent compared to December 2019,” Cr Seymour said.

The huge boost in visitors is as an indication of more Australians exploring own their back yard.

“We love welcoming visitors to the Fraser Coast and showing them what we have to offer,” Cr Seymour said.

“By reading the visitor book at the Story Bank we get an invaluable insight into how much people from across the country enjoy Maryborough.”

Guests have described the facility as

  • A wonderful way to get lost in time and revisit childhood feelings
  • Fabulous – Maryborough should be proud
  • An amazing voyage into fantasy and fun

“I am pleased to announce the Story Bank, Bond Store and Gatakers Artspace will be returning to normal operating hours from Monday, after hours were reduced in response to the pandemic,” he said.

“I encourage everyone of all ages to visit the Story Bank and take advantage of the 50% discount for Fraser Coast residents, or free entry if you bring a visiting friend or relative.”

The Story Bank is on the corner of Kent and Richmond streets, Maryborough, and opens Monday to Friday - 9.30am to 3.30pm and 9.30 to 2pm on weekends and most public holidays.
