The lighter of lamps

It is just on dusk – most of the people of the town have gone home for tea – along this darkening street comes a dapper little gent, Twigg by name, Arnie Twigg, a well-known sport, with a very special job.

He’s the Lighter of the Lamps, a little magician with a long wand, capering along the street, and pausing at each street light. He turns them on with a nod and a wink, puts a twinkle in the street, and blows the whistle to kick off the much-loved nightly sport of window-shopping.

Did you know?

In the 1950s bicycle related offences were frowned upon. In 1952, Arnold Twigg had an auto-bike (a pushbike fitted with an engine). He failed to stop at a stop sign and was fined £3 for the offence.
