Hervey Bay Regional Gallery is proud to announce that I asked for a sign (wedge-tailed eagle) by Anna Louise Richardson will travel to Logan Art Gallery.
The Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize 2023 winner will go on display for the first time since its acquisition into the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery’s growing collection. I asked for a sign… will form a part of Logan Art Gallery’s newly curated exhibition, Where do I belong? The exhibition explores the beauty and fragility of Australia’s native birds, whilst igniting hope for a more sustainable future.
Anna Louise Richardson’s 2-metre-tall charcoal drawing of a wedge-tailed eagle will feel right at home within Where do I belong? With a history of using animals as a vehicle to explore life and death, Richardson has developed a unique voice, particularly evident in her use of material and scale.
The sense of awe inspired by the wedge-tailed eagle highlights the emotional weight of the artwork, which was developed in response to the tragic passing of Richardson’s mother in 2020. Following this life-altering event, the artist experienced a number of bird-visitations, forming a connection between these avian visitors and her newly departed mother. Richarson visualised these interactions through the birds turned watching eye, forming an uncanny bond between subject and audience.
Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize, an initiative of Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and Fraser Coast Regional Council, seeks to explore our reciprocal and inextricable relationship with the natural environment through contemporary art. Deriving its name from the Butchulla word for ‘sand’, ‘Girra…’ highlights the enduring social and cultural importance of the natural environment in the Fraser Coast region.
As Hervey Bay Regional Gallery continues to grow its collection, loaning works of significance brings with it the opportunity to share creative experiences with more audiences across the country. Where do I belong? will be on display at Logan Art Gallery from the 20th of June to the 29th of August 2026.
