Drawing on their experiences as novelists, Kate and Sally will discuss the inspiration behind their books, their approaches to crafting memorable characters and compelling narratives, and the themes that shape their work. Hear about the realities of the writing life, the creative process behind bringing stories to the page, and the power of fiction to help us better understand ourselves and the world around us.

About the Authors:
Kate Mildenhall is the author of four novels - Skylarking, The Mother Fault, The Hummingbird Effect and The Hiding Place. The Hummingbird Effect was longlisted for the 2024 Stella Prize and shortlisted for the 2024 ABIA literary Fiction Book of the year. In 2024 she released a children’s book To Stir With Love, illustrated by Jess Racklyeft, shortlisted for the 2025 Indie Book Awards, ABIA Children’s Book of the Year, and Notable in CBCA Book Awards. For six years she co-hosted The First Time Podcast, interviewing hundreds of writers.
Sally Piper is the author of four novels: Grace’s Table, The Geography of Friendship, which was shortlisted for the ABIA Small Publishers’ Adult Book of the Year; and Bone Memories, a finalist in the Queensland Literary Awards for a Work of State Significance and the People’s Choice Book of the Year Award, and longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award and a Davitt Award. Her fourth novel, People Like Us, was published in July 2026. Her short fiction and non-fiction have been published in Australia and the UK, including in Griffith Review, The Saturday Paper, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Weekend Australian. Sally holds a Master of Arts (Research) in Creative Writing from Queensland University of Technology. She is an active member of the Queensland writing community, where she presents workshops, leads in-conversations and mentors other writers.
