Understand the format and rules of picture book writing, and learn to write your own.

Picture books are a deceptively simple literary format. Short word limits don't necessarily mean they're easier to write! This workshop is perfect for kick-starting your picture book writing journey, whether you're a beginner writer, or an experienced writer keen to dabble in a different format.

During the workshop, participants will:

• Discover the common elements shared by popular and award-winning picture books, including themes, narrative structures and storytelling techniques. 
• Learn how illustrations, covers, endpapers and layout improve picture book writing.
• Plan your picture book by finding the heart of your story and understanding why 'every word matters'.
• Gain general tips and protocols on how and where to submit your finished manuscript.

Suitable for writers of all experience levels, as well as educators, illustrators and anyone interested in creating stories for young readers.

About the Author:

Dr Lara Cain Gray is a children's book specialist who has built her multi-discipline career through roles in libraries and museums, academic teaching and research, in Australia and the UK. Career highlights include the role of Australia and New Zealand Curator at the British Library, and her current position as Head of Publishing at non-profit education publisher Library For All. She has reviewed books in print and online for over 10 years and is a current judge for the CBCA Book of the Year awards. 

Her latest publication is The Grown-Up’s Guide to Picture Books, an A to Z guide to what makes a great picture book great.
