Families to benefit from new library spaces

Children and families across the Fraser Coast will soon have more space to read, learn, play and explore, with the new Hervey Bay Library set to feature a vibrant children’s library designed to spark imagination and curiosity.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the purpose-built children’s spaces in the new Hervey Bay Community Hub would provide a welcoming environment where young readers and their families could explore stories, take part in activities and discover new interests.
“The new children’s library has been designed with families in mind, creating a colourful and engaging space where children can develop a love of reading from an early age,” he said.
“With more room to explore and discover, young readers will be able to browse books displayed front-facing to help them easily find their next favourite story, while the toy collection will offer a wider range of hands-on learning resources.
“These spaces are about encouraging curiosity and creativity while making the library an enjoyable place for families to spend time together.”
Cr Seymour said the new library would also offer more opportunities for early literacy programs and children’s activities.
“A dedicated storytelling room will host popular First 5 Forever sessions such as Rattle & Rhyme, Storytime and Toddler Time, along with new programs including Books, Bubs and Blocks, and Beards and Bubs,” he said.
“Families will also be able to take part in expanded Messy and Sensory Playtime sessions across multiple activity rooms, giving children more opportunities to learn through play.”
Libraries spokesperson Cr Michelle Govers said the new library would also introduce weekly STEAM sessions where children could explore science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics through hands-on activities.
“Children will be able to experiment with robotics, digital technologies and creative activities that help build problem-solving skills and confidence in a fun and supportive environment,” she said.
“Libraries today go beyond books — they are places where people of all ages can learn new skills, discover ideas and connect with their community.”
Cr Govers said the new library would also make visiting easier for parents and carers.
“A comfortable parents’ room with feeding and changing facilities will make the space more convenient for families with young children, helping ensure everyone feels welcome and supported when they visit,” she said.
The new Hervey Bay Library will form part of the Hervey Bay Community Hub, which will also include a Council administration centre and Disaster Resilience Centre.
Construction of the Community Hub is progressing, with the building expected to open in the second half of 2026.
