The Hervey Bay Library is preparing for a strong year of programming in 2026 with the appointment of a new Lead Programs Librarian, supporting the return of popular activities and the development of new initiatives ahead of the move to the Community Hub.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Chris Bell had joined Council from Ipswich City Council, bringing extensive experience in education, leadership and community-focused programming.

“Chris’s appointment is a great investment in both our people and our programs,” he said.

“He brings a strong background in delivering inclusive and engaging  library programs for all ages, and he’s already helping shape a full and varied program lineup for 2026.”

Cr Seymour said much-loved early years programs were returning this year, including First 5 Forever sessions such as Rattle and Rhyme, Play Time, Story Time and Toddler Time, supporting early learning through singing, play and discovery.

“Children and families will also see the return of creative and hands-on activities, while teens can once again enjoy relaxed, welcoming programs designed to help them connect and unwind at the library,” he said.

“A wide range of activities is also available for adults, from social sessions like Scrabble and chess to wellbeing and technology programs, film screenings and workshops.”

Cr Seymour said library staff would also continue taking programs beyond library walls, including Seed Library Talks that promote sustainable growing and community connection.

“Fraser Coast Libraries delivered 2,613 programs to more than 81,500 attendees last year, and we expect another strong year as we continue preparing for the transition to the new Hervey Bay Community Hub,” he said.

“The new library will provide more space and modern facilities to support an even broader range of programs, helping create more opportunities for learning, creativity and connection across our community.”

Several special initiatives are planned for the coming months, including the return of the popular Design a Bookmark competition in March.
