Join local artist Ruthie Purnell for a hands-on workshop to develop and refine wearable art creations for the
Waste to Art competition. Whether you're starting with a sketch or a finished concept, Ruthie will provide creative guidance, practical advice, and feedback to help bring your design to life and prepare it for judging and the wearable art parade.
Workshop Activities
Develop Your Design
Participants are encouraged to:
- Bring along existing concepts, sketches, prototypes, or materials for feedback and guidance.
- Start from scratch and explore new wearable art ideas.
- Experiment with a range of recycled materials and found objects available on-site.
- Refine designs and problem-solve construction techniques with support from the facilitator.
Materials Exploration & Swap
Discover creative possibilities in unexpected materials.
- Browse a selection of recycled and reclaimed materials.
- Exchange unwanted materials with other participants.
- Gather inspiration from the textures, colours, and forms of found objects.
Working Safely with Recycled Materials
Learn important safety considerations when creating wearable art.
- Understanding when and how to use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Safe handling of recycled, repurposed, and found materials.
- Selecting suitable tools and materials for wearable artworks.
Writing Your Artwork Story
A strong artist statement can help bring your work to life. Participants will explore:
- What to include in an artwork description.
- How to describe materials, inspiration, and sustainability themes.
- Sharing the story behind your creation.
- Creating a connection between your artwork and its audience.
- Examples of effective wearable art statements.
Runway & Presentation Tips
Make the most of your wearable art on parade day.
- Selecting music to complement your design.
- Presenting your artwork with confidence.
- Basic runway techniques and stage presence.
- Tips for showcasing movement, detail, and character.
Feedback & Q&A Session
An opportunity to:
- Ask questions and seek advice.
- Discuss design challenges and solutions.
- Receive personalised feedback on concepts and works in progress.
- Share ideas and learn from fellow participants.
What to Bring
- Sketches, ideas, or works in progress (optional)
- Recycled materials or found objects you'd like to use
- Items for the materials swap (optional)
- A willingness to experiment, create, and have fun!
Suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike. Participants will leave with new ideas, practical skills, and greater confidence in developing a wearable artwork for competition entry.

Workshop Cancellation Policy
Gatakers Artspace cannot accept responsibility for any changes in personal circumstances. Missed workshops or change of mind are at your own expense. If a participant chooses to cancel their confirmed registration, or cannot or does not attend the workshop, the following will apply:
- The registered participant may invite another person to substitute their place in the workshop (in which they are registered) at any time at no charge;
- If notice is received 2 or less days from the scheduled starting date, a refund will not be offered;
- If a workshop is cancelled by Gatakers Artspace a full refund or a reschedule will be provided. Gatakers Artspace will endeavour to advise participants of cancellation at least 48 hours prior to workshop.
